Movies: The Encounter

The "Encounter" is a 2015 sci-fi movie that chronicles three related experiences revolving around a crashed alien vessel in an Northern Arizona Forest. Collin Barstow, his fiancee, and friends head on a camping trip to celebrate the engagement of Collin and Kimberly. This is the day after the UFO has crashed, with reports claiming it was a meteorite. Meanwhile Duncan and Trevor, two local are out in the forest testing their scope and going hunting. They come across some some odd carcasses, most of them next to spores. The last individual is the Park Ranger who went out and investigated the crashed meteorite. When she get to the location she find an alien craft, wreckage, and a canister that she is exposed. While investigating a documentation, she is exposed to spore from the canister. She runs back to her jump and head to the ranger station. She believes she is poisoned and makes attempts to contact help. Missing the obvious "ALIEN SPACECRAFT". Instead she tried first aid and continue to rely on radio broadcasts. Over the course of the next few hours she mutates into some hybrid creature.

Meanwhile the Hunters, who have already been spooked by the lack of wildlife and carcasses, are preparing to head back. However, Duncan the oldest, senses something familiar. He tell Trevor to leave and runs off into the woods. Duncan is attacked by something. Trevor unable to get any help via the walkie talkie stays. Within hours Duncan who should be worse, gets up and runs away like a feral animal as the sun has just set. The Collin and company have already set up camp and had enjoyed a fun day of swimming and chilling out. As they were around the campfire at night, Collin and Holly spot something in the woods. They freak out and suggest to abandon camp immediately. Ryan, being a skeptic, hesitates and tries to remain mellow and is attacked by the creature. Over the next couple of hours the remaining people attempt to survive the night.

A UFO is seen scanning the area by Trevor. Collin is abducted. Holly goes and hides. During the night Trevor, who seems to have made telepathic contact with something follows it to it source in a cave. We see an injured "grey" trying to communicate with Trevor. Sadly the mental strain is too much for him. A few hours after down the government shows up. They engage the infect creatures and round some of them up, but mostly destroying the others. Trevor was killed by the creatures, and Collin is found huddled in the forest. Holly was accidentally shot while going for help.

A briefing is giving at the end of the movie some two years later. Collin has been locked away, as the psychological strain is too much. From the story it seems a UFO, with a cargo of of an infectious material, crashed in the forest. Although a signal was sent out, other were too late in arriving to contain the situation. Collin was scanned and seemed to have a biological immunity and was set free. However is is unable to communicate any of this due to the trauma he suffered.

As a movie... it was well done...but one of the biggest mistakes is the DVD cover..... the story takes place in a temperate forest. It seems that the story was supposed to have taken elsewhere in a snowy area. Even the alternate movie poster is inaccurate as no woman is abducted. That lead to some confusion. Also the Park Ranger was really really dumb. She saw the UFO, knew her equipment was jammed, and did not head down the mountains to a more civilized area? The POV camera was also annoying in my opinion. I felt let every character had a go-pro or just kept using their cell. It was interesting and entertaining.

The small nuggets of truth. The "Alien Broadcast" for one was a steady SOS that was interfering with various radio equipment and also being picked up on the camera/phones. It appeared as a overlay signal. The attempt a telepathic communication, seems that many individuals who have mind contact are overwhelmed. The UFO itself.... it wasn't bright and shiny... but dark with few lights. I think while in a surveillance type mode.... they appear as dark object in the sky...no flashy lights.
