Movie: Day the Earth Stood Still

This movie came out in 1951 and is about first contact. A UFO lands in Washington, D.C. and a humanoid visitor comes out. Unfortunately the visitor was thought to be pulling out a weapon and was fired upon. Gort, a robot quickly came to the defense, but it was soon discovered to be a misunderstanding. The alien is named Klaatu and was sent to a hospital.

He eventually reveals that a group of alien nation is concerned that Earth has developed technology that could threaten their existence if used improperly. If the earth doesn't stop it use and experimentation with Atomic energy, then the aliens will wipe out earth. He finds a sympathetic voice withe Helen and Tom who believe he is here to help us. They eventually get him back to his ship, hoping there act of kindness would allow him to see that humanity is not all that bad. Eventually he returns to his ship and goes back to the other with a report.

One a side note, the phrase "Klaatu Barada Nikto" originated in the movie as a command given to Gort in case anything happened. However, it has been parodied over the years and found it's way into Lovecraftian Mythos as well.

(Truth behind the fiction)
Like many movies, this is based on some factual evidence. Dr. Frank E. Stranges wrote a book discussing that the U.S. government indeed meet with a Venutian who worked for the government. According to the story Val has been working for the government since 1937.

Thor had six fingers on each hand, an oversized heart, one giant lung, copper oxide blood like an octopus, an IQ off the scale (could be estimated as 1200), and could speak 100 languages fluently (including alien languages). He also said his lifespan is 490 years. According to Dr. Stranges, Thor was about 6 feet tall and 185 pounds with brown, wavy hair and brown eyes. Dr. Stranges said President Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon both met Thor.

On March 16th 1957 in Alexandria, Virginia Val’s ship the Victor One landed and he and his crew of three, Jill, Donn and Tanyia, were greeted by two police officers, and after some quick thought transference, had them call their superior officer, who called the Pentagon and a meeting was arranged with Neil H. McElroy, the Secretary of Defence. Once McElroy confirmed the veracity of Val’s claims he was ushered through an underground tunnel to the White House where he met with President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Vice President Richard Nixon.
