Movies: The Signal

The movie was released early this year at a film festival and was in limited release. It is schedule to come out on DVD this fall. It is considered a suspense thriller, but those familiar with Aliens and UFO will quickly pick out the eccentric nature of the film and see it for what it is. This is an abduction movie.

Three young college age adults move cross country because their servers and school property was hacked by an individual known as NOMAD. The young men in the movie are part of the hacker sub-culture, brilliant and very techno savy. As they discuss thing with NOMAD, they find that the individual has hacked into their friends computer and has activated the camera.... NOMAD is watching. As they drive they are further taunted with images from traffic cams, showing them that they can easily be tracked. The two decided to expose NOMAD and blow his persona away.... and figure out his ISP address and location.
It leads to an abdonned home in the middle of the desert, in the basement they find something unusual.. like a hidden room or wall, but before they can go any further.... their friend yells. She was taken from the car and can be heard crying in the distance. The cars radio is scrambled..... as they search for... she is seen briefly and then beamed up... a bright light appears and all are knocked unconscious.

The main character wakes up in a facility, which he assumes to be run by the government. They are monitoring him and inform him that he  and his friend have had an encounter with an EBE.

The story exploits one fear I have had.... aliens using the net to possibly establish contact and lure people out. They have done that with phones and false memories... so this wasn't to far of a stretch and was very well done.
